Bala Cynwyd gardens are mature, shaded, and often built on ground that falls toward the river.

Bala Cynwyd sits at the corner of Lower Merion Township closest to the Philadelphia city line, with City Avenue running along that edge. The building stock is mixed in a way most of the township is not: stone and brick singles on the residential streets, apartment buildings and office towers along City Avenue, and larger properties on the streets that run down toward the Schuylkill. That mix is why landscaping in Bala Cynwyd rarely looks the same on two neighboring streets. Lot size, light and grade all change within a few blocks.

Three things shape the work. The trees are old and large, so shade is the default in most back yards and roots sit close to the surface wherever a bed meets lawn. The ground moves: on the river side of the neighborhood the slope is steep enough that runoff collects in the low corner of a yard and stays there, and stone walls and steps built into those grades have usually shifted an inch or two. And access is tight. Narrow driveways, street parking and mature trees at the curb decide how material gets in and how debris gets out.

Most of what we do here is renovation rather than new ground. Rebuilding steps and retaining walls that have leaned out at the top, regrading beds and lawn so water leaves the low corner instead of sitting in it, and replanting beds that have been in deep shade for decades with plants that will hold there. On the maintenance side it is mowing on a set route, pruning that keeps old shrubs in bounds without shearing them flat, and fall cleanup that takes longer than the lot size suggests, because the leaf volume comes off the street trees as much as the yard.
